Gay figure-skater Adam Rippon laughs off his haters

Out American figure-skater, who made headlines for being the first out gay man to qualify for the winter Olympics, faces continued twitter and media attacks with humour.

Rippon reportedly refused a meeting with Mike Pence, saying “You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?

“I personally don’t have anything to say to Mike Pence,” he told Good Morning America. “I’m very lucky because legislation that he’s pushed hasn’t affected my life at all. I spoke out because there are people whose lives have been affected by changes he’s tried to make. I spoke out for them because right now I have a voice … That’s a conversation for them.”

Pence wrote to Rippon on twitter: “I want you to know we are FOR YOU. Don’t let fake news distract you. I am proud of you and ALL OF OUR GREAT athletes and my only hope for you and all of #TeamUSA is to bring home the gold. Go get ‘em!”

On Tuesday Rippon shrugged off politics, telling CNN “I don’t want my Olympic experience being about Mike Pence.”

Donald Trump Jr. responded to this on twitter, saying “Really? Then Perhaps you shouldn’t have spent the past few weeks talking about him. I haven’t heard him mention you once???” Ignoring the fact Rippon is simply responding to press questions, and the fact that Pence did talk about the athlete.

Rippon appears unfazed by all the attention, writing on twitter: “With everything going on in the media about me this Valentine’s Day I don’t want people to get distracted and forget how beautiful I am (on the outside).”
