Gay Men More Likely to Marry Later in Life, Study Finds

The UK Office of National Statistics has found British people are marrying later in life, particularly gay men.

Part of a study called “Being 18” that tracks the habits of 18-year-olds since the millennium, it has also tracked the average age of marriage since the 1970s. Now that same-sex marriage is legal we have new data that tracks the marrying habits of gay men and women.

The study has found there has always been a gap between the age of men marrying women and women marrying men. For example, in 1970 the average age for a woman to get married was 22, and the average age for a man was 24. Today the average age for woman marrying a man is 31, and for a man marrying a woman is 33.

Taking data since 2014, when same-sex marriage was legalised in the UK, we see the average age for women marrying women sits at around 35, while the average age for men marrying men started at 38 and is now just below 40.
