Gay Star News Set to Close its Doors
July 31, 2019UK LGBT+ media group Gay Star News is set to close its doors and enter insolvency after seven years of trading, reports the BBC.
Staff were reportedly told earlier this week, just a day before pay day. The closure will result in the loss of 20 jobs.
Gay Star News launched in 2012 and within a few years saw more than five million unique users every month, making it one of the top give LGBT+ news sites worldwide.
The group was headed by Tris Reid-Smith and Scott Nunn, who aimed to create the first 24/7 LGBT+ news site.
“That is a great shame, LGBTQ media is a small enough place as it is,” tweeted Darren Styles, owner of gay magazine Attitude. “Attitude has a couple of digital vacancies coming if anyone wants to reach out to me. Can save some jobs at least.”
Reid-Smith and Nunn posted a heartfelt final article on their site last night, thanking the community, their readers and their competition.
Daniel Besson, a former employee of GSN has started a fundraising campaign to help his ex-colleagues get their salary paid this month. Here says: “This GoFundMe has been created to crowdfund as much money as possible to support the hardworking team at Gay Star News who poured their hearts and souls into raising awareness for every member of the LGBTI community. We just want to support these LGBTI workers while they find the next place to continue the work that has touched people around the world.”
