Georgia faces backlash from Hollywood over anti-LGBT adoption bill

The US state of Georgia is already facing backlash against its anti-LGBT adoption bill. The bill, SB-375, allows child welfare organisations to refuse placement of children with LGBT+ couples if the organisation’s religious beliefs conflict with homosexuality. Dubbed the “Keep Faith in Adoption and Foster Care Act”, it is now heading to the Georgia House of Representatives where it awaits consideration.

Georgia boasts a large number of film and television productions because of its significantly lower tax rate. Television shows like The Walking Dead, Dynasty, and Queer Eye are all filmed in Atlanta, as well as many of the Marvel movies. Collectively the industry brings in an estimated $7 billion to the state every year.

Ben Wexler, a TV executive and creator of the show The Grinder, has called for a production boycott of the state, with many other producers in Hollywood taking note: “To my fellow showrunners,” he said on twitter, “if this dumb bill becomes law, let’s be done filming television shows in Georgia.”

The producers of such shows as Difficult People and Spartacus have publically agreed with Wexler.

Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who recently announced he is expected a child with husband Tom Daley, has also criticised the state: “This ‘solution’ in search of problem (where none exists) could create real problems for the working people of Georgia when businesses deem the state too intolerant to call it their home.”
