Glasgow Pride celebrates 30 years of marching for equality

Tens of thousands of people filled the streets of Glasgow on Saturday as the city celebrated three decades of Pride and its 25th officially organised march, in a powerful show of solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities.

The first Pride march in Glasgow took place in June 1996 as a protest for LGBTQ+ rights. Since then, the event has grown into one of Scotland’s most prominent demonstrations of equality, visibility and community.

Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon joined this year’s procession through Scotland’s largest city. She marched with Time for Inclusive Education (TIE), the campaign group responsible for delivering Scotland’s LGBT Inclusive Education programme, underlining the central place of education in the ongoing struggle against discrimination.

The parade set off from Glasgow Green, followed the River Clyde into the city centre and returned to Glasgow Green, where participants continued celebrations with music and dancing along the route. The main event programme features multiple performances, with Liberty X and Ultrabeat headlining. Other acts appearing include Honey G, Kelly Wilde, Just The Brave and a Chappell Roan tribute act.
