Global organization with documented anti-LGBTQ+ stance gets involved in South Australian school presentation dispute

A prominent international organization, widely recognized for its opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, has announced its support for a South Australian mother considering legal action against the state’s education department. The controversy stems from a school presentation intended to foster LGBTQ+ inclusivity that reportedly included inappropriate content.

ADF International, the global arm of the US-based Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), describes itself as an advocate for religious freedom, free speech, and "a Christian view" of marriage and sexuality. However, the organization has been designated a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a label ADF disputes.

As The Guardian reports, the SPLC has documented the ADF's history of advocating for the criminalization of same-sex relations, defending the forced sterilization of transgender individuals, and making unsubstantiated claims linking LGBTQ+ people to paedophilia. It also alleges ADF suggests a "homosexual agenda" threatens Christianity and society.

An ADF International spokesperson has dismissed these accusations as "false" and "tired," maintaining that the organization "advances a Christian view of marriage and sexuality… rooted in the inherent dignity of every person" and condemns forced sterilization and criminalization of homosexuality.

The case involves Nicki Gaylard, who alleges that her daughter and other Year 9 students at Renmark High School were exposed to inappropriate references, including incest and bestiality, during a presentation by Headspace Berri last year. This session was specifically designed "to promote LGBTIQA+ inclusivity and acceptance and acknowledge the historical and continuing discrimination this community faces."

Headspace National has acknowledged the error, stating that "while the presentation was intended to promote LGBTIQA+ inclusivity and acceptance… there were aspects of the presentation that were not appropriate for young people." The organization confirmed it has since reviewed the incident and "strengthened the guidance" provided to its lead agencies to ensure greater oversight and suitability of community awareness activities and third-party content. The SA education department similarly described the event as an isolated and unacceptable incident, confirming corrective measures have been implemented.

Despite the presentation's progressive intent, ADF International's advocacy director, Robert Clarke, stated that while the case is "not about ideology," he also expressed concern in a press statement regarding "radical approaches to sex education" being "quietly rolled out" in schools. Ms. Gaylard has been quoted by the ADF as saying the incident "deeply affected" her daughter and "shortened her childhood."

The Alliance Defending Freedom's broader activities include celebrating its role in the overturning of Roe v Wade, which has led to severe restrictions on abortion access in the US, resulting in patient deaths and numerous women being charged with pregnancy-related crimes. The organization also has a history of engaging prominent figures, with former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott addressing the ADF on two occasions.

Elenie Poulos, a Macquarie University adjunct fellow and expert on religious and political discourses, has voiced concerns about ADF International's expanding influence. She characterized the ADF as having a "huge" impact and a "longstanding and aggressive approach to the rights of LGBTIQ people," describing its "aggressive anti-gay stance" as "extremely harmful."
