Grindr Gone as Pakistan Clamps Down

Pakistan has banned Grindr, as well as a number of other dating apps, as part of a move towards banning "immoral content" online. The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) issued a statement claiming it had sent notices to 5 apps, highlighting the damage caused by immoral or indecent content.

It is not understood if Grindr or any of the other apps named - Tinder, Tagged, Skout and SayHi - responded to this notice.

Homosexuality and extra-marital affairs are criminalised in Pakistan, with offenders facing severe punishments including up to 10 years in jail if caught. This has not stopped Grindr, and other apps, being downloaded collectively over a million times in the last year.

This is not the first time Pakistan has sent similar issues around the morality of digital content: earlier this year, Pakistan issued a warning to TikTok over content which offended morality, and more recently the PTA issued notices to Youtube to block with immediate effect any indecent or immoral content in Pakistan.
