Gus Kenworthy kisses boyfriend on international TV as most LGBT-inclusive Olympics come to an end

The Winter Olympics came to an end over the past week, cementing its place in history as perhaps the most LGBT-inclusive Olympics seen so far. Gus Kenworthy, the out US freestyle skier, kissed his boyfriend on international television in what is believed to be the first same-sex kiss broadcast at the Olympics.

“To be able to do that, to give him a kiss, to have that affection broadcast to the world, is incredible,” he later said. “The only way to really change perceptions, to break down barriers, break down homophobia, is through representation. That’s definitely not something I had as a kid. I never saw a gay athlete kissing their boyfriend at the Olympics. I think if I had, it would’ve made it easier for me.”

At the closing ceremony Kenworthy was photographed with fellow out athlete Adam Rippon. He joked on twitter, “Two weeks ago, at opening ceremonies, we met and a friendship began. Today, at closing ceremonies, it ends. @Adaripp, please stop calling me. You're honestly starting to get v clingy and I can't anymore.”

The two haven’t been without controversy, however, both publicly turning down invitations to the White House and criticising the current administration’s stance on the LGBT+ community. “I have no interest in faking support,” Kenworthy has said of Trump.
