A new report has found hate crimes have increased a massive 226 percent in counties that have hosted Trump rallies.
Writing in the Washington Post, researchers Ayal Feinberg, Regina Branton and Valerie Martinez-Ebershave argued that Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric may be the cause of this sharp increase in crime.
Using data from the Anti-Defamation League’s Hate, Extremism, Anti-Semitism Terrorism map datathey found that in the months following Trump’s rallies there was a significant increase in reported hate crimes.
“To test this, we aggregated hate-crime incident data and Trump rally data to the county level and then used statistical tools to estimate a rally’s impact,”they wrote.
“We included controls for factors such as the county’s crime rates, its number of active hate groups, its minority populations, its percentage with college educations, its location in the country and the month when the rallies occurred.”
They also pointed out that hate crimes have increased 17 percent nationally since 2016.
