Hawaii officially bans conversion therapy

Hawaii has become the 12th US state to finally ban conversion therapy for LGBT+ people. The Senate passed SB 270 in March with only one nay vote and earlier this month it made it through the House of Representatives. It is now heading to Democratic Governor David Ige, who will sign the bill into law.

SB 270 bans all licensed therapists from performing conversion therapy on minors.

“This has been a priority of the caucus for years,” said Michael Golojuch, chair of the Democratic Party of Hawaii’s LGBT Caucus. SB 270 “ensures that LGBTQ youth will not be tortured by mental health professionals.”

Human Rights Campaign’s JoDee Winterhof called out conversion therapy as “nothing short of child abuse with life-threatening consequences for countless LGBTQ youth” and praised Hawaii for its new law.
