Homosexuality decriminalised in Trinidad and Tobago

In a landmark case homosexuality has been decriminalised in Trinidad and Tobago, the small island nation off the coast of South America. The country had strict anti-buggery laws which could send gay people to prison for up to 25 years. LGBT+ activist Jason Jones filed a lawsuit against Sections 13 and 16 of the penal code, claiming they violated his rights to privacy and freedom of expression.

“I am doing this for the betterment of our nation, and for our future generations,” Jones said.

Justice Devindra Rampersad found these laws unconstitutional and ruled in favour of Jones.

Anti-LGBT groups protested the case at every turn, with demonstrations outside the courthouse. “Same-sex marriage is a cancer,” said one protestor. “We must keep the buggery laws if it is removed it is a slippery slope to same-sex marriage.”

While experts believe this ruling will be appealed it is a huge step forward for the LGBT+ people of Trinidad and Tobago.
