Hong Kong Chief Executive Criticised for Ignoring LGBT+ Questions in Public Forum

Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, has faced criticism for ignoring LGBT+ issues raised during a Facebook Live question-and-answer session.

Last week, Lam answered 30 questions over a 48-minute period on the social media platform, she is one of the first Hong Kong leaders to utilise the Facebook Live function to directly talk with the public. During the session over 470 LGBT-themed questions were posed, Lam failed to address any of them.

Many have since accused Lam of deliberately ignoring LGBT+ issues.

Billy Leung, convenor of Hong Kong Equality Project, told the South China Morning Post, “Many people hoped the chief executive would respond to [calls for an] anti-discrimination law on sexual orientation and gender identity.

“However, the hosts repeatedly avoided raising questions about the issue.”

This comes amidst growing support for LGBT+ rights in Hong Kong. A recent poll found 50% of Hong Kongers thought same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, a huge increase from the 38% in 2013.
