How ‘Bases For Pride’ Have Turned Homophobic Comments Into Donations for the LGBT+ Community

‘Bases For Pride’ is a twitter account created by four Rockies fans to reconcile their love for their team with Player Daniel Murphy’s offensive, anti-gay comments.

The concept is quite simple: For every good the player does on-field, donations to LGBT+ charities are generated.

“There’s a lot of people in the LGBTQ community who are Rockies fans and who have been torn since the season started, because they signed a guy who has been outspoken against LGBTQ,” said Nick Stephens, c0-founder of Bases for Pride along with friends Connor Farrell, Nick Tremaroli and Judy Steele.

Stephens continues “Ultimately we’re trying to make it so people can feel a little bit better about continuing to support the team with Murphy on it, and also feel like we’re doing good things within the LGBTQ community. We’re making the best of a situation that is kind of uncomfortable because honestly, we do root for him.”

Back in 2015, when playing for the Mets, Daniel Murphy had stated he “disagrees” with the gay “lifestyle.”

This year the campaign has raised nearly $10,000 for different LGBT+ charities.

Daniel Murphy, who is aware of the ‘Bases for Pride’ campaign stated last week: “If people are willing to take their time and talents and donate it to something that they feel is greater than themselves, then all the power to them”.
