1. Smile
As simple as it sounds, most people forget to – it’s understandable, going for a job interview is nerve-racking. But smiling can ease the tension, and even trick you into acting more confident.
2. Be prepared for unexpected questions
Never say “I don’t know”, that’s the kiss of death in a job interview. Prepare for some curveball questions, especially if the job is for a cutting-edge company or a high-level job.
3. Don’t be worried if you make a mistake
Some job interviewers intentionally throw an interview just to see how the candidate reacts. Keep calm and remember that one mistake won’t cost you the job if you get the rest right.
4. Know your interviewer before you get there
Have a quick research of your interviewer before the interview, look them up on LinkedIn, or maybe they have a mygwork profile. If you can find a common ground you’ll be more memorable.
5. Remember, qualifications aren’t always the deciding factor
Yes, it does matter if you’re qualified for the job, but so will everybody else applying. Sometimes what puts you over the edge is your cultural fit within the company. This basically means if your views and values align with the company you’re applying. Teamwork is important and they need to know if you can fit in.
6. Thank your interviewer, and be specific
At the end of the interview, shake their hand and thank them for their time, be enthusiastic and be specific, reference points you’ve just covered.
7. Follow up!
Email the interviewer with an hour with a quick thank you, then follow up in three days, and then every week until you get a solid answer.
