The first trans couple to be married in India have had their union celebrated by the state. The Kerala state government threw the happy couple a party at the Dimoro Hotel on Wednesday the 30th of May. Celebrities and politicians were among those on the guest list.

Ishan and Surya have both had their genders updated on official documents and were married on the 10th of May. Surya works as a model and TV presenter.

“We are now officially a couple – husband and wife and we will show the world that we can love and live a marriage too,” she told the press.

Trans advocate Maya Krishnan celebrated the wedding as well, telling NDTV: “This is a historic moment for the community of transgender persons – because there is no law on issues like marriage, adoption or atrocities against them in such situations. This marriage has been registered at the sub registrar’s office under the Special Marriage Act.
