Indian high school students forced to write “I am a lesbian” as punishment

A group of ten girls were punished last week at an Indian high school in Kolkata for alleged lesbian behaviour. The girls were forced to write a “confessional” admitting they were lesbians, supervised by the acting headmistress.

“We called those students and they admitted it. Considering the sensitive nature of the issue, I asked them to admit it in writing. I have got written admissions from all 10 students,” the headmistress told the press.

Leading LGBT+ activists in the country have called the punishment bizarre and offensive. “What happened with those girls is abhorrent,” said Malobika, the co-founder of Sappo for Equality. “Not only were they singled out on the basis of a few complaints, which could very well have been pranks, I don’t understand what purpose did the whole exercise serve? Are students in co-ed schools asked to write a confession about their heterosexuality when they are seen spending time together?”

The school has a history of overreacting to close friendships of the same sex. Local media reports students have said the atmosphere inside is “oppressive”.
