Indonesia classifies homosexuality as a mental disorder

Indonesia’s Health Ministry has said on Friday it plans to publish medical guide which will essentially classify homosexuality as a mental disorder. The guide will be based on two previous reports, one from the Indonesia Psychiatrists Association in 2016 which stated, “Gays and bisexuals were at risk of emotional problems such as depression owing to identity crises while transsexuals are susceptible to mental diseases.”

The second report is one from the Health Ministry in 2017, which at one point claims “homosexuality was against the ethos of the country.”

This comes just as a new bill proposing a ban on gay sex across the whole country has gained support from every major political party in the country. The new law would punish gay men for up to five years in prison and could be passed in as little as two weeks.

Currently gay sex is only forbidden in Aceh. The province is under Shariah law and has seen international media attention lately for its mass arrests of transgendered women and public lashings for gay men.
