Indonesia is set to criminalise homosexuality
February 1, 2018A new bill, which has support from all ten of Indonesia’s main political parties, has proposed a complete ban on gay sex in the south east Asian country. The new law would punish gay men for up to five years in prison and could be passed in as little as two weeks.
The secretary general of the PPP Party, Arsul Sani, was one of the political leaders who put forward this new criminal code. He said “It applies to people of the same gender who have sex, which is basically a forbidden act. It’s considered the same as adultery, where men and women having sex outside of marriage can be considered a crime.”
Currently gay sex is only forbidden in Aceh, the province is under Shariah law and has seen international media attention lately for its mass arrests of transgendered women and public lashings for gay men.
Gay hook-up apps have also been banned this week across the country, while more than 141 men were arrested in the capital city of Jakarta in gay spas.
