Indonesian Mayor Orders Exorcisms on LGBT+ People

January 29, 2019

Mahyeldi Ansharullah, the mayor of Padong in Indonesia, has ordered the Army to arrest LGBT+ people in order to preform exorcisms on them, reports Tirto.

Ansharullah has claimed the existence of gay people is because of “the influence of jinn, devils,”and that “we are ruqyah (using exorcisms) to prepare them to leave [the bodies].”

He has also instituted “educational activities” to help prevent “activities that are wrong in the family,” such as a boy “given a female toy, given a girl’s clothes, or vice versa.”

He also warned against men participating in “elegant dance” except for in activities like martial arts. He added that women winning democratic elections would also lead to LGBT+ people – “Elections that equate men and women… well, that is also an indication in that direction.”

“Those children, from the operations that we have, we will build and train, then we will cultivate the nationalism and plant their identity,” he added.
