Infamous Indiana Pizzeria that wouldn’t cater a gay wedding in 2015 is now closed

In April 2015, before same-sex marriage was legalised across America, a small pizzeria shop in Walkerton, Indiana, became infamous after the owner, Kevin O’Connor, announced he would never cater a gay wedding. It didn’t matter that nobody actually asked him to.

O’Connor told ABC 57 News: “That lifestyle is something they choose, I choose to be heterosexual. They choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the head to go along with something they choose?”

O’Connor insisted he was protected under the 2015 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allowed him to discriminate freely under the banner of Christian beliefs. However, O’Connor’s statements went viral and his pizzeria’s Yelp page was flooded with parody reviews and borderline gay pornographic pictures. He says he was forced to temporarily close the restaurant.

Republicans helped O’Connor launch a GoFundMe campaign online, raising over $840,000 – the second largest amount in GoFundMe’s history. The restaurant stayed open for a few more years and is now closing its doors for good. O’Connor is claiming the closure is now due to his wish to retire.
