Influential LGBT+ People From History: Laurence Michael Dillon

The first person to ever undergo female-to-male phalloplasty, Laurence Michael Dillon was a distinguished British physician who published a touchstone work on what would later be called transsexuality.

In 1939 Dillon began taking testosterone pills and later had plastic surgery to remove his breasts, and then changed his birth certificate. He received a full gender reassignment surgery from the plastic surgeon Harold Gillies.

In 1946, he published his works Self: A Study in Endocrinology and Ethics, which brought him to the attention of Roberta Cowell. He later performed part of her gender reassignment surgery.

1958, his trans identity became public and he was forced to flee to India, where he became an ordained Buddhist monk. He died there a few years later in 1962.
