Is your workplace truly inclusive? Why some employees don't feel comfortable being themselves

October 20, 2025

Creating a workplace where everyone feels safe, respected, and free to be their authentic selves is not just a matter of ethics – it's crucial for business success. Diverse teams inspire innovation and fresh perspectives, but what happens when employees don't feel comfortable enough to be open about who they are?

Many factors can contribute to this sense of unease. A lack of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) can limit opportunities for employees to connect and voice concerns. Insufficient diversity in staffing can leave minority groups feeling alienated and unheard.

Without visible verbal support and open celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month, Black History Month, and Transgender Week of Awareness, employees may doubt the company's commitment to inclusivity. Small but significant oversights, like the absence of optional pronoun sharing, can also create barriers for transgender and non-binary individuals. Finally, a lack of clear consequences for discriminatory behavior can foster a climate of fear and silence.

These issues can have a detrimental impact on employee well-being and, ultimately, the company's bottom line. By addressing these concerns, businesses can cultivate a more inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best work.
