  • Be an active ally not passive!!
  • Trans people may not be visible within your organisation and therefore may not have a voice, allies need to be that voice!(Ensure that the “T” does not get lost in the LGB agenda)
  • Not remaining silent when transphobic behaviour / incorrect language is observed
  • Don’t “out” a trans person, if you know their gender history.
  • Be willing to learn, as gender identity and expression is an ever-changing subject matter. Remember that there are many trans experiences that need to be considered and represented. No two journeys are the same.
  • Understand that gender identity is a wide spectrum and that all identities and expressions should be respected.
  • Know what terms are offensive and avoid them (and tell others who are using them)
  • Use the correct titles, names & pronouns when you know them
  • Don’t ask personal questions, if you really must, ask if it is OK to do so first
  • If a trans colleague comes to speak to you, listen! (you could be saving a life).
  • Read your firm’s trans policies, if they don’t have any, ask why!
  • Can you empower all your staff to be trans allies?

About Butterflies

In 2018, Emma Cusdin joined the company bringing a great deal of trans-inclusivity experience from her work with Trans*formation and GIRES.

Global Butterflies have worked with some of the largest companies in the UK, USA and Canada delivering trans* inclusivity programmes. We offer a number of training solutions but are very happy to work alongside any trans* initiatives that you are undertaking.
