Janelle Monáe comes out as pansexual in Rolling Stone cover story

April 27, 2018

Tightrope singer, Janelle Monáe, has finally come out as queer in a cover story for the Rolling Stone. After posting the lesbian-themed music video for PYNK, rumours abounded that Monáe was in a relationship with actress Tess Thompson. “I consider myself to be a free-ass motherf--er,” she said, in confirmation.

She went on to say she has been in “relationships with both men and women… but then later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

Her new album, Dirty Computer, is set to be a queer celebration: “I want young girls, young boys, non-binary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you… This album is for you. Be proud.”
