Japanese city Fukuoka set to recognise same-sex couples

The Japanese city of Fukuoka will become one of the latest areas in the country to officially recognise same-sex couples. Located on the southern island of Kyushu, Fukuoka is the sixth largest city in Japan and an influential part of the country.

The mayor announced plans this week to roll out a partnership oath system to allow same-sex couples over 20 to register their relationship: “I will consider the introduction of a support framework for sexual minorities that includes a partnership system, with the intention of creating a more inclusive society that recognizes diversity.”

Fukuoka will become the second Japanese city after Sapporo to recognise same-sex couples.

The new system will come into effect April 1st.
