Japanese city of Fukuoka officially recognises same-sex unions

The city of Fukuoka, home to 1.5 million people, has become the seventh municipality in Japan to officially recognise same-sex unions. Mayor Soichiro Takashima handed out certificates to five couples on Monday at City Hall.

Anri Ishizaki, a 33-year-old trans man who was there with his girlfriend was happy to be recognised: “We’ve already spent our lives together as a family but we’re happy (to be recognized) … We feel like we’ve received congratulations from society.”

While the unions won’t have all the same rights as marriage, they do carry legal, housing and medical protections.
