Japanese Politician Fears Collapse of Society if Everyone Became LGBT+

January 7, 2019

A Japanese politician has found himself in hot water after saying the country “would collapse” if everyone became LGBT+, reports the Japan Times.

Katsuei Hirasawa of the Liberal Democratic Partyspoke at a televised event on Thursday, telling a crowd that “criticizing LGBT would create problems, but if everyone became like them then a nation would collapse.”

He also condemned regions of Japan that were pushing for same-sex marriage and continually brought up the country’s low birth rate – which is at its lowest point since records began in 1899.

This isn’t the first time the Liberal Democratic Partyhas faced backlash for homophobic remarks. Earlier last year Japanese MP Mio Sugita said accepting LGBT+ people would lead to “an increase in unhappy people” and that most gay people were simply going through a phase.
