Judi Dench Says Her ‘Cats’ Character Is Trans

January 9, 2020

Judi Dench plays Old Deutoronomy in a new adaptation of the known musical ‘Cats’, and in an interview with ‘Out Magazine’ the actress said her character is trans.

The role is traditionally played by male actors making Dench the first woman to ever play that role.

“Its glorious to have been included in it, I must say,” Dench said. “[It was] nerve wracking, because all I can hear is Brian Blessed all the time in the production that I wasn’t able to be in,” she added, referring to the actor who played Old Deutoronomy in the West End production.

“I kind of call it ‘trans Deuteronomy,’ is the part for me, you know.”

She went on to say that “it was lovely, lovely to be led about and be an aged cat, very nice indeed.”

‘Cats’ is in theatres now.
