Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan are set to star as lesbian lovers in a new romantic period drama from the director of God’s Own Country, reports Deadline.
The film, Ammonite, is set in 1840s in a UK coastal town following the real-life romance between palaeontologist Mary Anning and a “London woman of means”. Production is set to start in March.
Francis Lee previous directed the similarly LGBT-themed God’s Own Country, about a blossoming romance between two male farmhands. That film picked up several awards and was nominated for a BAFTA.
With this casting Ammonite “instantly becomes one of the hottest projects in the works out of the UK,” writes Deadline.
