Kenyan High Court to Hear Arguments to Repeal the Criminalisation of Homosexuality

Kenya’s High Court has agreed to hear new submissions on the possible decriminalisation of homosexuality, reports Reuters.

The Court will hear these arguments on October 25 and decide on whether India’s recent repeal of Section 377 of the Penal Code (the law that forbids gay sex) has any relevancy in Kenya.

Currently those convicted of having gay sex in Kenya face up to 14 years in jail. The law has other effects too, with LGBT+ people often the subject of harassment, discrimination, and blackmail.

Recently, a ban on LGBT+ films was briefly lifted to allow a screening of much loved film Rafiki.The movie follows two best friends who fall in love despite their family’s political rivalry, and has been mounting critical acclaim on its way to the Cannes Film Festival, where it will become the first Kenyan film to screen there.
