A Labour MP has put forward a backbench bill that would officially criminalise conversion therapy in England and Wales.
Geraint Davies put forward the bill on Tuesday March 19. The proposed criminal offence would ban conversion therapy practitioners and fine those found in violation of the law £5,000.
The bill would make it an offence to “change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, or suppress a person’s expression of sexual orientation or gender identity” based on the assumption “that any sexual orientation or gender identity is inherently preferable to any other.”
It would also be an offence for somebody to “pretend to be a counsellor or psychotherapist” without proper qualifications and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
