Labour MP Wants to Force Marriage Equality in Northern Ireland This Week

An amendment to proposed delays in Assembly elections tabled by Labour MP Conor McGinn could see marriage equality finally established in Northern Ireland, reports RTE.

This week, MPs will debate extending time for Northern Ireland to restore its devolved executive, they will also debate several proposed amendments which include forcing the region to accept same-sex marriage.

“If it is called and selected… then I am very confident that that the MPs across all parties will emphatically endorse equal rights for people in Northern Ireland, that they can enjoy with the rest of Ireland and the rest of the UK,” said McGinn.

Theresa May has so far refused to intervene on the issue, saying marriage equality is a matter for the devolved legislature.

Other amendments include safe access to abortion and a motion to stop a no-deal Brexit.
