Khaliq Satcher shares how Freddie Mac's graduate program has set his career up for success
1. Skills Building
As an intern or analyst, you can choose from opportunities across eight departments designed to help further your skills. You'll receive focused training on practical workplace competencies and applications, as well as Freddie Mac business fundamentals. Each one of our program lines is tailored to provide the best possible setup for your growth.
“During the internship, you are placed on a team that aligns with your skillset and given the opportunity to work on challenging projects that have a big impact for the company. It is definitely not a ‘fetch coffee and make copies’ kind of internship,” Khaliq said. “You are depended on for your skills, creativity and perspective.”
"Even if it was just providing a listening ear, I knew I could count on my program leadership to be there for me.”
2. Mentorship
Recent graduates and students have access to mentorship opportunities beginning their first day. Mentorship allows you to gain insight into ways you can grow and provides you with an accessible person to ask day-to-day questions.
However, your mentorship opportunities aren't limited to your assigned mentor. You'll have the opportunity to work with employees at a variety of levels and build on other connections you make.
“From the start of the program, I was paired with a buddy and mentor,” Khaliq said. “But one of the things that surprised me the most is how much genuine support I received to be successful. The program leadership was phenomenal in ensuring I had all the tools to be the best I could be. Even if it was just providing a listening ear, I knew I could count on my program leadership to be there for me.”
"Who you are and what you bring to the table matters and is valued at Freddie Mac."
3. Networking
By participating in formal and informal networking opportunities, you'll grow your career by building a network with people who want you to succeed.
“There are opportunities to network with senior leaders through leadership roundtables, BRGs, coffee chats and program-specific events,” Khaliq said. “When I joined the program, it was incredibly endearing to me that Freddie Mac’s chief risk officer set up time with my cohort to get to know us and take our questions.”
4. Inclusive Culture
We operate with the understanding that it's our diverse culture that powers our work. During your time in the university program, you can join and participate in BRGs, such as HOLA, InspirASIAN and Pride. These groups align with the goals of the business to foster an inclusive workplace and can provide networking opportunities.
“I think the program does an excellent job at immersing you into Freddie Mac's culture,” Khaliq said. “I would encourage anyone who joins the program to have fun, work hard and most important, bring your whole self to work each day. Who you are and what you bring to the table matters and is valued at Freddie Mac.”
5. Mission Focused
At Freddie Mac, you're not just beginning your career. You're creating stability in the housing market while Making Home Possible in communities nationwide. If you're looking for meaning in your work, where your day-to-day makes tomorrow better for families across the United States, Freddie Mac is where you’ll find it.
“Through my participation, I hoped to gain valuable experiences that would push me outside of my comfort zone. I’m intrigued by being challenged and learning about knowledge areas I did not know existed,” Khaliq said. “I expected the work to be challenging, but I was more surprised by how passionate I’ve become about Freddie Mac’s mission and the housing finance industry. There is so much interesting work happening at Freddie Mac. There is something for everyone here.”
