Leigh Ryswyk becomes first AFL player to come out as gay

A former Australian Football League (AFL) player has publicly come out as gay, a significant milestone in the competition's history. Leigh Ryswyk, who represented the Brisbane Lions in a single match in 2005 before being delisted due to injuries, later achieved considerable success with North Adelaide, amassing over 220 games in the South Australian league.

During a recent radio interview, Ryswyk disclosed that he has been openly gay among friends for the past five years and received unwavering support from his parents upon sharing his truth with them, BBC reports.

This announcement follows a notable milestone in the AFL just seven months prior, when Mitch Brown, a former player for the West Coast Eagles from 2007 to 2016, identified as bisexual. Prior to Brown's openness, the AFL was the only major professional men's sport worldwide without an openly gay or bisexual player, even after retirement.

Ryswyk expressed optimism about the AFL's environment for current players contemplating similar disclosures. "I believe the AFL, along with the community, will embrace that player," the 41-year-old stated on Melbourne radio station Joy 94.9’s GayFL program. He further highlighted the potential for celebration within the queer community and fan base when athletes choose to come out.

Reflecting on his own journey, Ryswyk shared that it took him approximately three years to muster the courage to come out to his family. "Coming out to your family is always a monumental experience, filled with many thoughts and emotions," he explained. The heartfelt conversation with his mother, which included tears and affirmations of love, left a lasting impact on him. He recounted his father’s equally supportive response, which expressed happiness for his son’s well-being.

While Ryswyk has maintained a level of privacy regarding his sexuality, he acknowledges that for many, this announcement will be their first introduction to this aspect of his identity. Originally from Victoria, he moved to Queensland to join the Lions and later enjoyed a distinguished career with North Adelaide, ultimately earning induction into the AFL Queensland Hall of Fame.

Last August, Mitch Brown described the burden of concealing his sexuality as a significant factor in his decision to retire, further exemplifying the importance of openness and acceptance within the sport.
