Lesbian and Gay News Shuts Down Due To Lack Of Support And Advertising

March 28, 2022

Gender-critical news outlet Lesbian and Gay News has been shut down with its management team seemingly blaming the LGB Alliance and trans people for its downfall.

The so-called Lesbian and Gay News was set up in February 2021 by Boyz magazine owner David Bridle after he was widely condemned for his support of LGB Alliance, an anti-trans pressure group.

The website’s “About” page says it was established “to reflect the life, politics, and culture of same-sex attractions and to report on major debates around sex and gender”. In its one year of operation, Lesbian and Gay News almost entirely focused on trans rights.

In a post published on Sunday (March 27), the website’s management team confirmed that it is no longer in operation, according to PiPa News.

The team said it was proud of its “significant and significant contribution to the GC [gender critical] movement at a critical point,” but to say that “canceled-culture activism” from “gender ideology hate groups and activists” had prevented it from receiving advertising revenue.

The lengthy article went on to reflect on the founding of Lesbian and Gay News, saying the website was set up after Bridle was subjected to what it called “a campaign of hate, vilification and cancelation.”

The team said they wanted to provide “an important publication for the LGGB gender-critical movement” and were “optimistic” they would receive the right amount of community support for the website in the long run.

However, the website’s management team said it did not receive the expected support – specifically, it renamed the LGB Alliance, saying Gay and Lesbian News needed its “full and active support” was needed in order to survive.

"LGN was the only GC LGB publication in the country; and the LGB Alliance was the only national GC LGB organization in the country,” the team wrote.

“The constituency of GC LGB activists is still small, and unless the LGB Alliance kept us in the loop, continued to actively promote us, and regularly provided us with information and materials to publish, then till now we were not able to flourish. With respect to their activities and planned activities.

“As time went on, it became clear that we were being kept largely at arm’s length – despite a few cuddly gestures that fell far short of what we needed.”

Closing the post, The Gay and Lesbian News management team said: “At this time it is not possible for us to continue as much as we would like to.”

Lesbian and Gay News was set up in February 2021 after a tumultuous few months for Bridle, the owner of Boyz magazine, a monthly magazine aimed at a gay male audience.

In November 2020, Bridle’s magazine promoted a webinar organized by the LGB Alliance, an organization that has been described as “transphobic” and “trans-exclusive” by lawmakers, activists, and scholars. The LGB Alliance denies it is transphobic.

Bridle later issued a sincere apology in which he acknowledged that “readers, places, and advertisers” were “deeply disturbed” by his support for the LGB Alliance. Just a few weeks later, he hit out at an HIV charity for withdrawing an ad in his magazine, which claimed he was being “punished” for “debating” trans issues.

He claimed the LGB Alliance “believes in biological sex rather than gender-based public policy” and urged LGBTQ+ people to listen to the organization.

As part of his efforts to atone, Bridle briefly employed trans woman Rebecca Fallon de Havilland as Boyz magazine’s trans affairs editor. In February 2021, she resigned, saying she was “absolutely intimidated” by Bridle’s defense of the LGB Alliance.

Shortly after, Bridle set up Lesbian and Gay News. Over the past year, the website has focused largely on “gender critical” talking points, with a selection of writers and commentators arguing against the inclusion of trans people within the LGBTQ+ community.

In its one year of operation, Lesbian and Gay News has enjoyed popularity among “gender critical” Twitter users, but it has apparently failed to connect with a wider LGBTQ+ audience.
