Lesbian councilwoman assassinated in Brazil

Lesbian councilwoman Marielle Franco, of Rio de Janeiro, was murdered on Wednesday night in what police are reporting as a targeted assassination. Franco came from the impoverished area of Favelas where she was elected in 2016 on promises of fighting for oppressed peoples and against police brutality.

Two men fired nine shots while the councilwoman was in her car, killing both Franco and her driver. “The scene is clearly of an execution,” said Marcelo Freixo of Franco’s Socialism and Liberty Party. “The shots were all directed at her. They were all from a professional.”

Homophobic violence has reached all-time highs in the country. 40 percent of all anti-LGBT violence in the world occurs in Brazil.
