Lesbian Kenyan Film Sells Out First Week After Ban Lifted

Rafiki, the Kenyan lesbian film about two best friends who fall in love despite their family’s political rivalry, has been mounting critical acclaim on its way to the Cannes Film Festival, where it will become the first Kenyan film to screen there, the Independent reports.

Despite all its success, Rafiki has yet to screen in its home country. The film has been banned in the African nation because of its gay themes.

The ban seems to be the only thing stopping the film from snagging an Oscar nomination for best foreign film – to be nominated the film has to have screened in its home country for at least seven days.

The film’s director Wanuri Kahiu has sued the Kenyan government for not allowing them to hold screenings, with the court ruling in her favour.

“Gay themes or the practice of homosexuality did not begin with Rafiki,” said Judge Okwanny.

“I am not convinced that Kenya is such a weak society that its moral foundation will be shaken by seeing such a film.”

The film’s initial week-long run has already sold out, with producers having to schedule more viewings to keep up with demand.
