Lesbian South Carolina Couple Sue After Religious Foster Care Agency Turns Them Away

A married lesbian couple in South Carolina are suing a religious foster agency for turning them away because of their sexuality.

Eden Rogers and Brandy Welch applied to foster a child with Miracle Hill Ministries, the state’s largest foster care agency. They were rejected because they did not meet the “religious criteria” of the agency. They told the couple that the agency had an “obligation to partner with foster parents who share our beliefs and who are active in a Christian church” and that they “would not be a good fit”.

The couple is now being represented by Lambda Legal, the ACLU of South Carolina and the South Carolina Equality Coalition.

“Faith is a part of our family life, so it is hurtful and insulting to us that Miracle Hill’s religious view of what a family must look like deprives foster children of a nurturing, supportive home,” they said in a statement.
