LGB Adults Are Almost Twice As Likely To Use Dating Apps As Opposed To Straight Adults

Lesbian, gay and bisexual adults are twice as likely to use dating apps than heterosexual adults, according to a new study published by the Pew Research Centre.

'The Virtues and Downsides of Online Dating' survey looked at the “patterns, experiences and attitudes related to online dating in America.”

The survey showed that while 30% of U.S. adults have used a dating app in the past, online dating is “especially popular” among sexual minorities such as lesbian, gay and bisexual people.

The survey which sampled 4,860 respondents noted that 32% of them were men, while 28% were women.

Race seems not to be a determining factor with white, black or Hispanic adults all being equally likely to use dating apps.

48% of people aged 18 to 29 were likely to say they have taken part in online dating against 13% of adults 65 and older.

But looking beyond the age factor, researchers highlighted some “striking differences by sexual orientation” found in the data.

More than half of respondents who identify as LGB (55% of them) said they have tried a dating app or website, while only 28% of straight adults did the same.

“Because of our status as a sexual minority, LBGTQ+ people have always sought new and innovative ways to find each other. LGBTQ+ people were early adopters of personal ads, AOL chat rooms, social networking websites, and most recently, dating apps,” Eric Silverberg, the CEO of Perry Street Software, told the 'Daily News’.

“Apps can be a key part of how people come out and build community, especially for people living far from major urban centers. Furthermore, LGBTQ+ people often keep apps on their phones even after finding partners, and use them for information about events, travel tips, entertainment, or just to chat with like-minded people.”
