LGBTQ+ Advocacy Group President Fired for Helping Scandal-Hit Governor

The Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ advocacy group in the USA, has sacked its president, Alphonso David, after a report by the New York Attorney General revealed that David had advised scandal-hit former New York Governor Cuomo on how to handle sexual assault allegations, according to the board.

In a joint statement by HRC Board Co-Chairs Morgan Cox and Jodie Patterson, the HRC said that David's actions violated the organization's mission, and alleged he made significant "untruths" about the investigation and his role in it.

"At HRC, we are fighting to bring full equality and liberation to LGBTQ+ people everywhere. That includes fighting on behalf of all victims of sexual harassment and assault," the statement said.

Alphonso David hit back, claiming he had been unfairly sacked. "As a Black, gay man who has spent his whole life fighting for civil and human rights, they cannot shut me up. Expect a legal challenge," David said in a statement.

While he had been President of the HRC for 2 years, David previously worked as legal counsel – for civil rights, and then as Chief Counsel – for Cuomo's office.

The report by New York Attorney General Letitia James found that Cuomo's aides had worked to rebut and undermine accusations of sexual assault by the Governor. David played a role, allegedly, in helping to undermine Lindsey Boylan.
