LGBTQ+ catholics undertake historic pilgrimage to Vatican during Jubilee Year

Approximately 1,400 LGBTQ+ Catholics from 20 nations are participating in the first officially recognized LGBTQ+ pilgrimage to Rome as part of the Vatican's Jubilee Year. The pilgrims, many adorned in rainbow attire and carrying crosses, are engaging in prayer vigils, masses, and other activities throughout the weekend.

While the pilgrims will not have a private audience with Pope Leo XIV, the pilgrimage marks a significant moment of inclusion within the Catholic Church.

The late Pope Francis, who passed away in April, while maintaining the Church's doctrine, made gestures of welcome towards the LGBTQ+ community, including a 2023 decree permitting priests to bless same-sex couples – a decision that sparked controversy among conservative factions, particularly in Africa.

The BBC reports that last Saturday, members of the LGBTQ+ community entered St. Peter's Basilica through the Holy Door, a symbolic act of reconciliation. The Holy Door is opened only once every 25 years to commemorate the Church's Jubilee years.

Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, an organization advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion within the Catholic Church, stated, "Not only are LGBTQ people marching and walking to say that they're part of the Church, but official Church institutions are welcoming them and helping them to tell their stories."

An estimated 32 million pilgrims are expected to visit the Vatican during this Jubilee year. Pope Leo XIV, elected in May, has yet to publicly address the LGBTQ+ community or comment on his predecessor's 2023 decree.

In 2020, Pope Francis affirmed that "homosexual people have a right to be in a family," emphasizing that "they are children of God... nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it."

The 2023 decree allowed priests to bless same-sex and "irregular" couples under specific conditions, while the Vatican clarified that such blessings should not be integrated into regular Church rituals or connected to civil unions or weddings, reiterating the Church's view of marriage as between a man and a woman.
