LGBTQ+ History Made with First Trans and Non-Binary Billboard No.1 Single

Kim Petras and Sam Smith have both made LGBTQ+ and music history with the success of their duet single 'Unholy'. The song, released late September this year, slowly gained more traction on social media until it reached the number one spot on the Billboard Charts on October 24. This marks the first time in history that both a transgender artist (Kim Petras) and an openly non-binary artist (Sam Smith) have obtained a number one Billboard single.

The critically acclaimed track, which is about self-confidence and finding your identity, quickly went viral on TikTok after its release. The social media platform boosted it until it reached popularity within the charts. Though Sam Smith has achieved number one chart positions before, they have not reached the Billboard number one in the US, nor had they made this accomplishment since coming out as non-binary. They took to Instagram to convey their thanks to their fans, stating: “I can’t believe it. Number 1 in America. I am honestly speechless, overwhelmed, nautious (sic) and extremely happy. This song is so special to me for so many reasons and I am just so proud of everyone involved for their bravery and guts and spirit.”

Alongside a photograph of Petras and themself, they continued the caption with praise for their co-artist and friend. “I am so honoured to get to work with such incredibly talented musicians and humans,” Smith wrote. “And Kim… what magic you are. You are a treasure and an inspiration to so many. Thank you for jumping with me @kimpetras, this is ours sailors. I do this for you and you only. What a journey. What a 10 years. What a life Xx”

Kim Petras, who has achieved her first number one single ever, also took to the social media platform to show her gratitude towards the groundbreaking achievement.

“I’m so grateful. Sam I can’t thank you enough for riding with me for years at this point. I’m so honored to be a part of your first number one in the US which you should have 500 of at this point. I love you forever angel Sam.”

Petras recently spoke to Billboard about her desire to break the mold for trans artists but maintained that she doesn’t want to be alone in such an achievement. “That same story just keeps repeating over and over for trans girls who have been making exceptional music and have been pushed under the rug while someone else takes credit from them,” explained Petras to Billboard. “I’m just happy that Sam gave me the chance to shine here.”
