LGBTQ+ inclusion audit: how to assess your organisation's culture

May 7, 2026
You cannot improve what you cannot measure. An LGBTQ+ inclusion audit provides a baseline assessment of your organisation’s policies, culture, data, and leadership commitment.

What is an LGBTQ+ inclusion audit?

An LGBTQ+ inclusion audit is a structured assessment of an organisation’s current state across the dimensions that determine whether LGBTQ+ employees can succeed and thrive. The most valuable audits are honest, involve LGBTQ+ employees in the process, and produce a prioritised improvement plan.

The six dimensions of an LGBTQ+ inclusion audit

1. Policies and legal compliance. Review your anti-discrimination policy (does it explicitly cover sexual orientation and gender identity?), harassment policy, trans inclusion policy, and data protection compliance for LGBTQ+ employee data. 2. Benefits and compensation. Review parental leave equity for same-sex couples, trans-inclusive healthcare, partner benefits for same-sex and unmarried partners, and bereavement leave covering chosen family. 3. Culture and day-to-day experience. Use employee surveys with LGBTQ+-specific items, qualitative focus groups, leadership behaviour observation, and assessment of physical environment (gender-inclusive bathrooms, pronoun options). 4. Data and measurement. Assess self-ID data collection, disclosure rates, LGBTQ+ representation by seniority, attrition rates, and promotion rates versus company average. 5. ERG and community. Assess whether an LGBTQ+ ERG exists, is active, funded, and staffed, has genuine executive sponsorship, and influences policy. 6. External benchmarking. Have you submitted for HRC CEI or stonewall.org.uk/creating-inclusive-workplaces/workplace-equality-index” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Stonewall WEI rating? Are you listed on myGwork? What are LGBTQ+ employees saying on Glassdoor?

From audit to action

  1. Identify the three to five highest-impact gaps
  2. Assign named ownership for each action
  3. Set timelines: 30 days, six months, one year
  4. Communicate transparently with employees, including LGBTQ+ employees
  5. Review annually and update the plan
