Liev Schreiber describes trans daughter Kai’s coming out story

May 12, 2025

Liev Schreiber expressed great pride in his daughter Kai, who revealed her trans identity with a straightforward request.

“The most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns,” the “Ray Donovan” actor shared with Variety in an interview released on Thursday.

According to ‘Los Angeles Times’, the 57-year-old Emmy nominee discussed his support for his daughter, as they prepared to attend the Ali Forney Center’s spring gala together on Friday. The organisation provides support and housing for homeless LGBTQ+ youth. Schreiber shares 16-year-old Kai and 17-year-old Sasha with actress Naomi Watts from ‘Mulholland Drive.’

Schreiber stated, “Kai was always who Kai is,” and mentioned that her coming out as trans “didn’t feel like that big of a deal to me” because she “had been so feminine for so long.” He commended her as “such a fighter,” without specifying when she came out.

Kai, who recently debuted as a model in Valentino’s Fall Winter ’25 campaign, is represented by IMG Models. Despite saying her coming out was relatively understated, Schreiber told the publication, “It’s important that she goes, ‘Hey, I am trans,’ and ‘Look at me.’”

Schreiber joins several well-known fathers, such as former NBA player Dwyane Wade and actors Marlon Wayans and Robert De Niro, who have publicly supported their transgender children. Recently, ‘Raging Bull’ actor De Niro expressed his support by saying, “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter,” after Airyn publicly shared her transition in an interview with Them in April.

“I don’t know what the big deal is,” De Niro added, who has Airyn with actor Toukie Smith. “I love all my children.”

While some celebrities have shared their experiences raising transgender children and offered advice to others, Schreiber refrained from doing so. “I don’t know the answer for your kid,” he told Variety, noting factors such as a parent’s upbringing or religious beliefs. He did provide some advice for parents: “Teenagers are a headache. They’re hard.

“It doesn’t matter whether they’re trans or not because you’ll come out of this,” he said. “But a trans teen is going to be a teen. They’re such a pain so much of the time, and Kai is as feisty and outspoken as they come.”

Schreiber and Watts were together from 2005 to 2016. Over the years, both have attended movie premieres with their children and celebrated their children’s achievements on social media.

“Ladies and gentlemen the one, the only, the indomitable @kaischreiberr,” Schreiber captioned an Instagram post of his daughter during her runway debut in March.
