London LGBTQ+ Nightclub Accused Of Turning Away Couple For Not Looking “Like Queer Women”

September 16, 2021

An LGBTQ+ club in London has been accused of turning away a couple on the grounds they didn't “look like queer women.”

Speaking on TikTok, a user named Olivia said venue door staff told her and her girlfriend to go “somewhere not associated with the gay community.”

A spokesperson for Heaven told MyLondon they were “sorry if the security team got it wrong,” adding any mistakes were made unintentionally.

Filming a TikTok on her way from Heaven, Olivia said: “If you're a queer woman who doesn't look like a queer woman, don't bother going to Heaven, because I just got turned away on the grounds that I should go somewhere that's 'not associated with the gay community.'"

“On Pride, I got turned away when I was with my girlfriend and my friends, who are a couple, so that happened to me today.Just don't bother going to Heaven unless you're a gay man. That's basically it.”

Heaven apologised for any mistakes on the night, citing difficulties in hiring new security staff after lockdown.

“To clarify, the security on the front for Heaven are LGBT themselves,” a spokesperson told MyLondon.

“[With] Saturday night being canceled, Pride was extremely busy – and [on] busy nights we do have a stricter door [policy] and prioritize regular customers to Heaven.

“It was insanely busy with the queue to get in remaining until 3.30am.”

According to MyLondon, the spokesperson said efforts to hire new door staff were ongoing and two female bouncers “who will hopefully be able to help run the team and deal with the issues” had been offered jobs.

The venue is also advertising for a new head of security.

“Heaven is proud to be an LGBT venue and safe place to go to. Decisions on the door are to keep the venue safe and sometimes mistakes are made,” they added.
