London Trans Pride - Peaceful Protest

On Saturday 26th of June, thousands of trans people will march peacefully through London to celebrate the memory of trans lives taken and uphold the next generation of trans revolutionaries.

This march is supported by London Trans+ Pride.

This protest is in response to the UK Government’s continued blatant disregard of trans safety and wellbeing. To use the cover of a global health crisis to scrap progressive reforms to the Gender Recognition Act mandated by the results of the 2018 national consultation is no less than calculated. We need community-led transformation now more than ever. Trans life is change. For an initial appointment with the NHS Gender Identity Clinic the current waiting time is over 3 years and counting. Many trans people are therefore forced to resort to prohibitively expensive private healthcare and/or self-medication. The former places great financial stress on an already precarious population, while the latter carries the health risks associated with unmonitored treatment.

Earlier this year a discreet Government consultation threatened the provision of gender neutral public toilets across the UK, relying on discredited arguments conflating sex and gender. As with the GRA, the Government’s blinkered stance on trans-inclusive public toilet provision is evidence of a predetermined agenda set by mounting pressure from anti-trans groups.

Continuing to practice intersex genital mutilation surgeries on infants at a time when healthcare for trans youth is under attack over questions of consent is an abhorrent double standard. London Trans Pride echo the Intersex NGO Coalition UK‘s appeal to end all harmful IGM practices, ensure redress and compensation, and provide access to free counselling. We march in memory of all the trans pioneers: siblings, leaders and loved ones who even in death survive so that we can thrive. We march to champion the protection and celebration of BIPOC trans people, trans women, trans sex workers, disabled trans people, poor trans people and trans kids, who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
