lululemon's Deyvi Arteta Delgado on sports, inclusion, and finding belonging
August 5, 2025lululemon's Deyvi Arteta Delgado, Warehouse Floor Lead, sat down with myGwork to talk about his journey from Venezuela to the U.S., his love for sports, and the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion in athletic spaces.
Hi Deyvi! Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Deyvi, and I’m originally from Venezuela. I moved to the U.S. in 2017, and since then I’ve been growing both personally and professionally. I currently work as a Floor Lead in lululemon’s Pick Tower department at the distribution centre in Columbus, Ohio. Before this, I worked for two years in Inventory Control. I enjoy leading teams, solving problems, and creating a positive environment at work. Outside of work, I’m passionate about running and have participated in several races. I’m also happily married and have two Italian Greyhounds that are a big part of my life.
What are your favorite sports to watch and why?
My favorite sports to watch are the Olympics and soccer. I love the Olympics because you can see athletes from all over the world giving their best. It’s really inspiring and emotional. I enjoy watching different disciplines such as track and field, gymnastics, and swimming. I also like soccer because it’s exciting and full of energy. I grew up watching it with my family, and it always brings people together, especially during the World Cup.
Would you be more involved with sports if it was more LGBTQ-inclusive?
Yes, I think I would feel more comfortable and involved if sports were more LGBTQ-inclusive. It’s important to feel safe and accepted when you’re part of a team or community. When there’s more visibility and support for LGBTQ athletes, it creates a positive space where everyone can be themselves. That kind of environment makes me feel more motivated to participate and enjoy sports even more.
What role do you think the workplace plays in encouraging employees to take part in sports and exercise? How can they make sure this is done in a way that is inclusive to everyone?
I think the workplace plays a big role in encouraging people to be active. At lululemon, for example, our company culture really inspires everyone to take care of their physical and mental health. That’s actually one of the reasons I started running—I felt supported and motivated by my team and leads. To make it inclusive, it’s important to offer different types of activities and events so everyone can find something they enjoy, no matter their background or fitness level. Creating a positive and judgment-free environment also helps people feel more confident to participate.
What advice or recommendations would you offer to sports organizations, teams, or individuals who are looking to make their sports community more LGBTQ+ inclusive?
My advice is to start by creating a safe and respectful environment where everyone feels welcome. Use inclusive language, support LGBTQ+ visibility, and listen to the voices of LGBTQ+ athletes and team members. It’s also helpful to organize events or partnerships that celebrate diversity and promote acceptance. Even small actions can make a big difference. Most importantly, it’s about making sure everyone feels like they belong and can be themselves.
What advice would you give to an LGBTQ+ person keen to get more involved with sports who is feeling nervous?
My advice is to take the first step, even if it feels a bit scary. Start with something small, like joining a local class, running group, or LGBTQ+ friendly event. It’s okay to feel nervous, but remember, you’re not alone. There are many people who have felt the same way. Look for safe and inclusive spaces where you can be yourself. Also, focus on the joy and benefits of being active, not on being perfect. You belong in sports just as much as anyone else. Be proud of who you are and take it at your own pace.
