Maavia Malik becomes first transgender news anchor in Pakistan

Maavia Malik, a former model, has made history in Pakistan by becoming the first transgender broadcast journalist. She appeared on Kohenoor News, a private television channel based in Lahore, on Friday.

The feat is particularly impressive given Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim and conservative country. So far Malik has received an outpouring of support online, with BBC journalist Shiraz Hassan praising her accomplishments.

The Pakistani Senate has recently passed a bill that protects trans people from abduction, harassment and sexual assault, as well as installing fines and punishments for those who deny them access to property insurance and education opportunities. Some universities have offered free tuition to trans students in response.

Trans Action Pakistan has estimated there are around half a million trans people in Pakistan alone.
