Majority of Scottish People Support Legal Recognition of Third Gender

A recent consultation from the Scottish government has revealed a majority of Scots support the legal recognition of a third gender, The Scotsman reports.

Out of 15,000 respondents, 65 percent supported the idea of legal recognition of a third gender, while 56 percent support the recognition of non-binary people.

Two-thirds also agreed that the legal age of changing your gender should be lowered from 18 to 16.

Most of the respondents wanted the process of legally changing your gender to be made easier and to no longer have the requirement of medical evidence of gender dysmorphia, or of having to live as your true gender for at least two years.

“We will consider this analysis and the views of consultees as we take forward our commitment to bring forward legislation on gender recognition,” said a spokesperson for the government.

James Morton, manager of the Scottish Trans Alliance, said that while this isn’t a definitive promise of new legislation, it’s a start: “it is always great to see high levels of consultation support.”

“We also welcome that opponents of the reform have been able to freely share their views with the Government, as we believe that constructive dialogue and close scrutiny of legislation proposals is always helpful in ensuring there will be no unintended consequences.”
