Malaysian Politician Refuses to Apologise for Intensely Homophobic Sermon

Islamist politician Nasrudin Hassan has defended an intensely homophobic sermon he delivered, which criticised the government’s handling of LGBT+ people.

In the sermon, he suggested the Malaysian government take “stern action” against LGBT+ people, then condemned religious affairs minister Mujahid Yusof Rawafor meeting with transgender rights activist, Nisha Ayub. Hassan, who is the information chief for the Malaysian Islamic Party(PAS) has since received criticism for provoking unrest.

“In the sermon, it was merely pointed out that illegal sexual activities involving the LGBT community are against Islam, and that the government should take stern action against them instead of catering to the LGBT community’s requests,” he said.

“How can this be considered as inciting hatred against the government and causing disharmony? We merely want the government to take action.

“Why is there no action being taken against the LGBT community, which is now so outspoken?

“Islam and politics cannot be separated in Islam, (as religion) should be the guide for leaders on how to manage a country.”

Hassan’s party is well known for their staunchly conservative Islamic values. They control the state of Terengganuand have strong support through most of the northern states of Malaysia.
